Governor Larry Hogan has designated Saturday, May 2 as Healthcare Heroes Day in Maryland - honoring doctors, nurses, medical workers, and first responders.

Flags will fly at half staff, the State House Dome, Camden Yards, and M&T Bank Stadium, will be lit up blue, and the Navy’s Blue Angels and Air Force’s Thunderbirds will flyover the state to honor first responders and health care workers.

Details are forthcoming on the flyover   - but viewers are encouraged to to watch the flyover from the safety of their home-quarantine and to refrain from traveling to see the flyover.

At his press conference, Gov. Hogan said:

We’re going to be asking all Marylanders to join us in lighting up the state of Maryland blue to show our immense gratitude to these men and women who truly are the definition of Maryland strong"

The Blue Angels and Thunderbirds have already flown over New York City  and Philadelphia this week as a to salute frontline COVID-19 responders.

Update -

Here is the Blue Angels Flight path for 5/2/20

Eddie Vedder Accepts All In Challenge - Offers A Once In A Life Time Pearl Jam Package For Covid-19 Relief

Well, Eddie Vedder is the latest celebrity to accept the #Allinchallenge.  He was nominated to put up a prize by actress Laura Dern - and he came up with something pretty amazing for one lucky Pearl Jam fan.

The challenge - which is raising money for charities like Meals on Wheels, No Kid Hungry and America’s Food Fund during the COVID-19 crisis  - has encouraged celebrities to offer up prize packages for raffle.

Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam's prize is pretty amazing - one fan (and a guest) will get to attend a Pearl Jam show of their choice (inclduding sound check) and help pick the set list.  Then the winner will watch the show from the stage and according to Vedder - “ ... as long as you’re up there with the crew, I figure, heck, maybe you could bring out a guitar for me, we could put you to work a little bit ... I mean, I will give you a few hits off my wine — or maybe we’ll just get you your own bottle.”

Oh - the winner will be invited on stage and have the crowd sing “Happy Birthday” to them - even if it’s not their birthday...LOL .. Oh - and you'll also take home a signed Telecaster guitar.

To enter - head to the All In Challenge page and make a donation

Oh - and being the baseball fan he is - Vedder passed the challenge on to Theo Epstein of the Chicago Cubs

Jeff Tweedy Covers the Classic Pavement Song

It's been week's since we've been able to see our hair stylists and barbers due to business restrictions set in place due to the Coronavirus ... some people have resorted to some home-hari-do's and dyes ...

But Wilco's Jeff Tweedy and his sons had a message for those about to bust out the clippers and scissors - Darlin Don't You Go and Cut Your Hair !

Well - maybe they weren't speaking directly to those giving themselves a trim - but they did cover the classic Pavement song "Cut Your Hair" on last Saturday night’s episode of The Tweedy Show - their weekly live streamed Instagram show.

The cover comes towards the end of the show - but the episode also features performances of Wilco's “Should’ve Been In Love” , “Airline To Heaven,” a serenade of  “If I Ever Was A Child”  to Basil (the dog) and a cover of Mazzy Star’s “Fade Into You”

Noel Gallagher Unveils Unreleased Lost Oasis Song ... Liam Gallagher Responds In The Most Liam Way

We might not ever get an Oasis reunion - but fans of the Manchester band have a little good news - Noel Gallagher has uploaded a never released demo from the band to the web.

The song, Don't Stop, was recorded at a soundcheck during the band’s final tour in 2009.

Noel said -

“Like the rest of the world I’ve had infinite time to kill lately so I thought I’d FINALLY look and find out what was actually on the HUNDREDS of faceless unmarked cd’s I’ve got lying around in boxes at home.

As fate would have it I have stumbled across an old demo which I thought had been lost forever.

As far as I’m aware there is only one version of this tune ‘out there’ from an Oasis soundcheck in Hong Kong about 15 years ago? I’m not sure whether the soundcheck version pre dates the demo as there’s no date on the CD. I know some of you love this tune so we thought we’d put it ‘out there’ for you to enjoy/argue over.”

Of course - Liam has taken to twitter to respond to the track's release - in very Liam fashion ...

“Well there’s something missing in this god almighty stew and it’s your brother your brother don’t forget your brother"

followed by -

“Oi tofu boy if your gonna release old demos make sure im singing on it and boneheads playing guitar on it if not it’s not worth a wank as you were LG x.”

Dave Grohl Surprise NYC Emergency Room Nurse With Intimate Performance of

It took a minute for Dave Grohl to pop his head out of quarantine with some good vibes for us.  Despite the cancelling of his DC Jam celebrating the Foo Fighters' 20th anniversary on the  4th of July ... Dave has let his talent to two noble Covid-19 related causes in the past week.

Just last week, Dave and fellow FF Taylor Hawkins were joined by some of the biggest names in the music biz for a sing a long of times like these

Then, the band also announced #FooFridays - where they will be releasing long form performances to youtubeeach week

But this week- Dave went the extra mile - surprising a big time Foo Fighter fan with an intimate performance of Everlong on the Jimmy Kimmel Show.  NYC Emergency Room nurse TJ Riley isn't just battling the virus though - he is also a survivor of the infection,

Riley equated having his favorite musician perform the song for him to "having a coronavirus dream"

Thank you TJ and thank you to all the doctors, nurses, first responders, and ALL essential workers who continue to do their part to help the world get through this

In 2017, The National celebrated the release of their Grammy-award winning album Sleep Well Beast with a 2017 show at Basilica Hudson, a 19th century factory turned arts space in Upstate New York that was equal parts intimate and unique.

The band played in the center of the venue - surrounded by a small group of lucky fans.  Around the venue were accompanying musicians - who played in as the band performed  Sleep Well Beast in its entirety.

The show was recorded and was produced into an 80 minute concert film by La Blogothèque in association with 100 Year Films titled Guilty Party: Basilica Hudson (stream it below)

Guilty Party: Basilica Hudson was released this week as part of the band's fundraising campaign for their touring crew - who are currently out of work due to the covid-19 pandemic.  You can donate to the cause HERE

Hear The Rolling Stones new single - Living In a Ghost Town, their first since 2012

Earlier this year, The Rolling Stones were in the studio recording new material, and one track stuck out enough from the session, the band decided to release it today. It marks the first new release from the band since 2012

The song, which was 'created & recorded in Los Angeles, London and in isolation', is titled Living In a Ghost Town, has lyrics that certainly resonate in today's global climate:  “Life was so beautiful / Then we all got locked down … Please let this be over / Stuck in a world without end.”

On the song, the band had this to say

Mick-

‘‘So the Stones were in the studio recording some new material before the lockdown and there was one song we thought would resonate through the times that we’re living in right now. We’ve worked on it in isolation. And here it is – It’s called ‘Living in a Ghost Town’ - I hope you like it”

Keith-

“So, let's cut a long story short. We cut this track well over a year ago in L.A. for part of a new album, an ongoing thing, and then shit hit the fan Mick and I decided this one really needed to go to work right now and so here you have it , "Living in a Ghost Town".  Stay safe!”

Charlie-

“I enjoyed working on this track. I think it captures a mood and I hope people who listen to it will agree.”

Ronnie-

“Thanks so much for all your messages these past few weeks, it means so much to us that you enjoy the music. So we have a brand new track for you, we hope you enjoy it. It has a haunting melody, it’s called Living in A Ghost Town.”

The band released the song along with a video showing city life in quarantined times

Sitting in my dad's home studio during this crazy time makes me miss him even more. Music is the greatest healer and the most powerful way to bring people together especially during tragedy.

If my dad were here, I know he would have been the first to donate his time and effort.

Thank you for including me, I am honored to be part of this and to help spread love through music.

On behalf of the Chris and Vicky Cornell Foundation we are donating $50,000 to @MusiCares for its Covid relief efforts.
This is for you daddy and all your fans who have helped lift us up and who continue to keep the music alive.

Tips to keep you glasses from fogging up while wearing a facemask

f you, like many others, spent the first weekend of essential facemask wearing trying to navigate around the store while dealing with fogged up glasses - here are a few tips to keep your spectacles fog free:

1. Add a nose wire - this can be as simple as a folded piece of aluminum foil - folded along the top of your mask.  This will help keep the mask flush to your face - especially around your nose

2. Insert  a tissue into your mask - adding a tissue to the top of your mask will help absorb the moisture from your breath and keep it from reaching your glasses

3.  Keep your glasses clean.  Dirty lenses can fog easier ... using soapy water can help as well with the soap leaving a film on the lens that will deter the fog

Here's a nice video tutorial for you to follow:

Glass Animals - Quarantine Covers. Episode 2. (Lana Del Rey - Young & Beautiful)

The band are also proud to share their Open Source website where they have shared layered artwork, a special set of audio stems, samples and various other materials (including unseen photos, videos and GIF’s) which are available to download. From there, fans will be able to build their own music, Instagram lenses, animated videos, illustrations, alternative artwork, GIF’s, 3D videos and remixes – all using the tools that the band will provide.  Get creative HERE

On making the site - Dave Bayley said:

"Isolation can drive us all crazy. But, at the same time, it could be quite healthy for people’s creativity. I find creating things helps me keep my head straight. All the frustration of being locked in can be released by making something. In the modern age where literally ANYTHING is possible, that canvas is sort of so blank it can be a black hole. So the main hurdle is often finding that initial piece of inspiration, that nugget that kicks off an idea and can be built on. Sometimes it’s a sound, sometimes it’s a graphic, sometimes it’s a photograph, or a tiny film clip…it’s usually some kind of raw-ish material that has the capacity to be transformed, re-imagined, twisted and reshaped into something else. This site will host all GA output in its rawest forms. Bits of code from our websites, drum/synth/sfx sounds I made for our songs, layered photoshop files from covers, 3D scans of stuff from around my house used in the latest artwork (including my own head) etc etc. Anyway - I hope it inspires someone to make something and I hope it gives someone an outlet for their confusion in this strange time.”

Fans are encouraged to share their creations via the hashtag #GlassAnimals on Twitter and Instagram, and the band will be sharing their favorites on a weekly basis. You can follow the Instagram hashtag here and Twitter here. OPEN SOURCE will be updated regularly with new files – which the band are calling ‘Expansion packs’.

Hear Johnny Depp and Jeff Beck's debut singe -

Apparenly Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp's recent live appearances aren't just random acts of jamming.  The duo have been playing and recording music together for the past few years - and the proof was revealed this week - as the they shared the debut output of their collab - a cover of John Lennon's Isolation.

They turn the piano rocker into a blues driven jam - with the help of  Vinnie Colaiuta on drums and Rhonda Smith on bass.

The track was recorded last year, and Beck felt now was the time to release the track

“We weren’t expecting to release it so soon, but given all the hard days and true ‘isolation’ that people are going through in these challenging times, we decided now might be the right time to let you all hear it.”

And Depp added:

” Lennon’s poetry — ‘We’re afraid of everyone. Afraid of the Sun!’ — seemed to Jeff and me especially profound right now, this song about isolation, fear, and existential risks to our world. So we wanted to give it to you, and hope it helps you make sense of the moment or just helps you pass the time as we endure isolation together.”

Beck concluded:

“You’ll be hearing more from Johnny and me in a little while ... but until then, we hope you find some comfort and solidarity in our take on this Lennon classic.”

Cage the Elephant's Social Cues is the first album in over a decade to have three Alternative songs reach No. 1

It took over 10 years - but someone has finally matched Coldplay's Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends accomplishment of having three songs from the same album reach number 1 on Billboard's Adult Alternative Songs airplay chart.

And that band - Cage the Elephant ... with their album Social Cues

The songs "Black Madonna" , "Ready to Let Go" and the title track, "Social Cues" have now all reached the top spot for airplay on the radio.

These songs bring the band's tally of #1s to five ( "Come a Little Closer" and "Mess Around" were their others) and they are now tied  for the 10th most Number 1 hits in this category with The Black Keys, Florence + the Machine and The Lumineers. Coldplay and U2 lead all acts in the category -  with 13 No. 1s each.

Take a moment out of your day and revisit the last time we saw Cage - along with Beck and Spoon when the Nightrunning Tour hit Merriweather Post Pavilion last summer HERE

The masks don’t need to be surgical masks or N95 respirators which are needed at hospitals  - but can be face coverings you can purchase or you can make one yourself using household items  - following the CDC’s recommendations (scroll for video demos)

A Pandemic Playlist in Ten Stages - Curated by Dave Grohl

Escapism - the  intentional detachment and distraction from the real world. Is music something you have been using to distract yourself from the world lately?

Yeah?  Seems Dave Grohl has too - and in between telling his hilarious stories on his new Instagram, he took some time to pen an article for The Atlantic - sharing his 'Pandemic Playlist'

The article starts with:

Hi, I’m Dave Grohl. Welcome to quarantine!

In order to get through this difficult period (and I truly believe that we will get through this, in time), it is important to recognize the many stages of isolation and anxiety, and to pair them with appropriate musical accompaniment. Here are a few suggestions that you might find helpful.

He then goes on to reveal  his 10 song playlist that is broken down into what he sees as the 10 stages of Pandemic:

Stage One: Preparation

Dave assumes everyone stocked up on TP and hand sanitizer back in January and was ready to go ...

Stage Two: Nesting

OK - you're stuck in the house ... what can you get done?  Clean everything?  Reorganize the kitchen?  Paint the living room?

Stage Three: Productivity

Remember all those things you said you wanted to learn to do but never did?  Why not learn to juggle (not knives please) or start knitting, or learn to speak German!

Stage Four:  Virtual Connection

Turns out that you CAN still have happy hour with friends ... but it is all on this program few had heard of a few months ago called Zoom. Where it's like being on the set of Hollywood Squares!

Stage Five: Online Learning

OK - schools have adjusted to the new normal - and now the parents are the teachers ... kind of ... with online learning  ... we now understand why teachers always saying they are underpaid and we REALLY hate new math

Stage Six: Intimacy

Everyone is predicting a baby boom in 9 months ... How many babies will be named Corrine, Ronda, or even Quarantine?

Stage Seven:  Claustrophobia

You reached the end of Netflix, the house has been disinfected (three times today), and you're ready to just go out and do SOMETHING ... that doesn't involve 'seeing if the grocery store has TP'

Stage Eight: Panic

You can't sleep ... your phone screen time is up 95% ... you keep reading about cell phones causing the virus, that Carole Baskins killed her husband, and that The Simpsons have been right about all of their predictions

Stage Nine: Insanity

Rona Rules are like airport rules - you want a beer and a burrito at 7am in your pajamas? Go for it. Nothing is wrong anymore ...

Stage Ten: Hope

We're all in this together, right?   There's light at the end of the tunnel ..  Let's start thinking of the silver linings and realize it's all going to be ok ...

And Dave ends his column as only he could ... with one simple request: go wash your fucking hands.

Baltimore's DJ Kopec's Next Quarantine Dance Party Aims to Raise $50,000 for the Ulman Foundation's

Chris Kopec aka DJ Kopec has been DJing for 25 years - and when the social distancing guidelines were established due to the COVID-19 pandemic - he looked for an alternative outlet to bring people the music  ... much like we have seen musicians host living room concerts - DJ Kopec has turned his basement into a nightclub - and he invited all his fans to party with him - remotely.  Spinning 1-2 hours of family friendly dance music live on Facebook for the world to enjoy.  And word of the parties has gotten out - with his Facebook parties garnering over over six million views!

And it's not just people looking to dance that have caught wind of the Saturday Night Quarantine Dance Parties ... after Kopec used the tips he received from this first event to donate 500 pizzas for Howard County Emergency Services professionals - others have stepped up ... and in the past 2 weeks he has partnered with Holly Poultry and State Street Poultry & Provisions to donate 60,000 pounds of chicken to Maryland residents in need and 30,000 breakfast sandwiches to local healthcare workers, and 12,400 chocolate bars for members of the Maryland National Guard through the generosity of H&S Bakery, Nature’s Yolk, The Hershey Company, and the United Way of Central Maryland.

But this Saturday night's Superhero themed party (April 18 from 7-9p)  - that will benefit the Ulman Foundationwho continues to provide services to adolescent and young adult cancer patients through the COVID-19 pandemic, has caught the eye of a very generous and anonymous donor, who has already pledged $25,000 to the cause.

And Kopec is looking for his fans to help match their incredible donation - so a $50,000 donation can be made to The Ulman Foundation.  You can donate during the party or ahead of time here:  https://give.ulmanfoundation.org/dj-kopec/Donate

Watch The Naval Academy Glee Club's Stunning Virtual Performance of 'America The Beautiful'

The US Naval Academy is not "letting distance keep them apart" and that message came through loud and clear in this beautiful rendition of 'America the Beatuful' sang virtually by the Academy Combined Men's & Women's Glee Clubs.

The video was put together using clips submitted by members who are at home around the country during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sting joins Jimmy Fallon and The Roots for the perfect 'at home' rendition of 'Don't Stand So Close to Me'

With his late night TV show set shut down - Jimmy Fallon has been producing The Tonight Show - from his home.

To keep the show's continuity - he's had guests, musical performances, and has even been jamming with his house band - The Roots.

Jimmy pulled the trifecta off last week - having Sting on as the musical guest and jamming with The Roots.  What's more impressive - is they played the perfect social distancing song- "Don't Stand So Close To Me" ... and since that's not impressive enough- they played it using instruments found at home while in quarantine (except for Sting who played lead guitar) ...

Sting - Vocals,Jar Shaker

Jimmy - Vocals, Jar

Questlove - Scissors, Forks

Black Thought - Hair Pick

James Poysner - Melodica

Captain Kirk - Ukulele

Mark - Bass

Tuba Gooding Jr. - Tuba

Stro - Pot Lid, Wooden Spoons

Remembering John Prine and Bill Withers - Artists Pay Tribute to the Latest Losses of the Musical World

With two of music's heavy weights passing in one week - naturally the tributes have come pouring in.

Soul legend Bill Withers passed on March 30, 2020 from heart complications at the age of 81.

In a statement to the Associated Press his family said:

We are devastated by the loss of our beloved, devoted husband and father. A solitary man with a heart driven to connect to the world at large, with his poetry and music, he spoke honestly to people and connected them to each other. As private a life as he lived close to intimate family and friends, his music forever belongs to the world. In this difficult time, we pray his music offers comfort and entertainment as fans hold tight to loved ones.

Some of the tributes to Withers include:

Jim James of My Morning Jacket performing a resonating version of 'Lean on Me' on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (from home of course)

Portugal. the Man revealed their cover of 'Lovely Day' along with this touching message:

We did a cover of “Lovely Day”, we know it pales in comparison to the original but there is something special that happens when you learn how to play your favorite songs. We grew up listening to AM radio in remote Alaska and Bill Withers was one of the mainstays on those long drives to the grocery store. Bill’s music is imprinted in our DNA. It touches everything we do and we love him for the gifts he gave us. Bill will be missed but his music will live on forever.

Thank you Bill. We love you.

The second musician lost in the week was John Prince - the legendary singer songwriter who succumbed to coronavirus complications.

The tributes are pouring in for John as well -

Fellow folk icon Joan Baez shared a video of her at home playing Prine’s “Hello in There”

Local musician Tristan Gilbert posted his tribute - a cover of In Spite of Ourselves

Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, along with his sons Spencer and Sammy, covered “Illegal Smile” during on of theirStuffinourhoue livestreams:

The Decemberists’ Colin Meloy posted a cover of  Prine during a livestream on Sunday, doing a rendition of “Angel from Montgomery.”

No Band? No Problem - Declan McKenna's Social Distancing Performance of 'Beautiful Faces' features Declan McKenna, Declan McKenna, Declan McKenna, and Declan McKenna

There's a line in the Declan McKenna song Beautiful Faces that goes:

"tonight I’m good staying inside but I’ll be dancing for sure"

We liked the song way before the whole #StayHome movement - but it hits a little closer to home these days ...

Anyways -it seems that Declan was itching to jam with this band this past weekend - but also wanted show he was practicing his best social distancing - he recruited some alternate musicians to accompany him - Declan McKenna, Declan McKenna, Declan McKenna, and Declan McKenna ... pretty clever!

The National recently announced they plan to help support their touring crew "family" who is currently out of work because of the live show's the band has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic (they also have had to cancel their Homecoming festival).

Last week, the band announced that they will be supporting their 12 member touring crew - by dotting all of the proceeds from their official online merch sales and new fanclub memberships to their 'family' who has been out of work due to the band having to cancel shows because of the Coronavirus

They are taking things a little further now - with what they are calling “communal events” -  releasing content from “our vaults, classic live sets, or some unseen/rarely seen footage to pass the time at home” each Monday.   The releases will be accompanied by a fundraising effort found here.

Sheryl Crow & Citizen Cope release Cover of Bill Withers

Last September - Sheryl Crow released what she claims to be her final album, Threads. It includes guest features from Bonnie Raitt, Chuck D, Eric Clapton, Sting, Kris Kristofferson, St. Vincent, James Taylor, Maren Morris, Gary Clark Jr., Brandi Carlile, Emmylou Harris, and Neil Young.

It appears that there was one more collaboration she had up her sleeve - a cover of Bill WIthers' “Lonely Town, Lonely Street” she recorded with Citizen Cope and she has released the song following the news of his death last week.

Crow spoke about Withers:

“I love Bill Withers. His passing last week was a heavy blow, on top of the challenges we’re all facing just trying to live day to day right now ... After making incredible, beautiful, funky records like ‘Ain’t No Sunshine,’ ‘Grandma’s Hands,’ ‘Use Me,’ and ‘Lean On Me,’ Bill got tired of the music business and stopped recording in 1985. When I was fortunate enough to meet him, I begged him to make music again and he replied, ‘I am a stonemason now and I am good at it!’ He told me he was happy and didn’t want to make music anymore.

Times like these remind us about what’s really important in life — love, family, living life in harmony with each other and our planet. Bill’s music was about that, and so much more.”

Quarantine Kids Got Talent: Check out these kids showing off their skills while stuck at home

If there is any silver lining in the global COVID 19 pandemic - it is that it is happening at a time when we all have cameras in our pockets pretty much all the time and the ability to share our content with the world just by tapping the screen.

While we've been enjoying all the living room concerts and ZOOM jam sessions - one thing we've really been digging is seeing how many freaking talented kids there are out there!

Check out a few of our favorites ... and if you have one you want to share - send us some info at wrnrpromo@gmail.com ... or tag us (@103wrnr) on your social media :)

We have to start with the OG of badass kids - 9 year old Nandi Bushell ... she's been our idol for a while - but challenging Travis Barker to a drum battle - that's next level!

Travis Barker - Nandi Bushell - Drum Battle

Next we head to Italy - where this talented pair of 12 year old twins posted an inspiring violin rendition of Viva la Vida by Coldplay ... of the performance, they said:

“We thought we’d spend a bit of time with you all, from north to south. For us, music is a source of relief, and we hope you guys can use it too.  ‘Viva la Vida’ by Coldplay seemed like the perfect song for this Sunday, full of sunshine and hope.”

Mirko e Valerio, Violinisti Little Band covers "VIVA LA VIDA" (Coldplay) during quarantine in Italy

Next we have drummer from right here in Maryland (you can tell by his drum kit) .. 9 year old Rollins has posted a few videos of his guitar and drum skills - but this Nirvana jam is our favorite!

In Bloom (Nirvana) - Drum Cover - 9 Year Old Rollins

Another local talent we found came to us in the mail .... seems that Nick saw our post about the CAAMP coloring book and took some time to complete the pages and send them to us ... Thanks Nick!

Stayin Inside - Your Quarantined Weekend

WIth much of the country under stay at home orders to help stop the spread of COVID-19 - musicians have been going a little stir crazy ... many have done living room concerts (see some of our favorites here) ... but the social distancing required just means that the concerts are solo sets.

But one group of musicians got a little creative - and used everyone's favorite new web conferencing software - ZOOM - to have a jam session .. and the output was somewhwre between a cornavirus anthem / PSA / parody song ... they reworked the classic BeeGees song  Stayin Alive and told a story of what we should all be doing this weekend - Stayin Inside. Bravo guys!

In case you want to know where we'll be this weekend - its right here, listening to the best of the RNR-Chives
