Earlier this month - country stars Lady Antebellum changed their name to Lady A - admitting “antebellum” was a racially insensitive reference to the pre-Civil War era United States.
And now Dixie Chicks have followed suit - dropping the word Dixie from their name and rebranding themselves as simply The Chicks. Even thought the band's name was a reference to the Little Feat song “Dixie Chicken” .. the term Dixie is also a reference to Civil War-era South and has come under increased scrutiny in the past few weeks.
The decision comes with the statement on thechicks.com that says: “We want to meet this moment”
The band accompanied the new name with a new single called March March from their first new album in 14 years - Gaslighter (due out out 7/17 on Columbia records) and a Seanne Farmer directed video featuring scenes from various protest marches.
