Paddling with a Purpose - Annapolis Dragon Boats

On Saturday morning, August 26, 2017 the Annapolis Dragon Boat Foundation (ADBF) will attempt to set a Guinness World Record by speed paddling a Half Marathon (13.1 miles), in a Dragon Boat crewed entirely by breast cancer survivors. The attempt will take place in Annapolis Harbor/Spa Creek sanctioned by Guinness World Records, the Annapolis Harbor Master, and the US Coast Guard.

All 22 crewmembers of the Dragon Boat attempting the World Record have been diagnosed with and treated for breast cancer. The crew will be supported by other ADBF members who will be on shore and on safety boats. The public is invited to watch the World Record Attempt at the Judging Pavilion located at City Dock in Annapolis where there will be music, interviews and live streaming of the event on the water with equipment provided by Video West. Complimentary refreshments will be provided by Trader Joes. Judges will be documenting the World Record attempt for submission to Guinness.

The World Record attempt is intended to benefit the Annapolis Dragon Boat Foundation and its outreach programs in support of those diagnosed with breast and other cancers, during treatment and after it’s completion. A GoFundMe campaign, ( www.gofundme.com/PaddlingWithAPurpose! ) has been established for individuals to make tax deductible contributions to support the work of the Foundation. 100% of the proceeds will be contributed to the Foundation.

“One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lives, and alarmingly this figure has doubled in the last decade”, according to ADBF chairwoman Janet Black. “New medical treatments have resulted in many more survivors than ever before and we are immensely grateful to our doctors and the researchers who have prolonged our lives. However, once treatment ends, survivors have to learn to live with the side effects of treatment as they adjust to their ‘new normal’. That is where dragon boating can help, we are a positive, fun group who help ourselves and others take control of our lives again, through shared experience and incredible exercise on the water. The idea is that all of us are capable of more than we imagine and we can achieve goals with the support and encouragement of our team members.” Black added.

The Annapolis Dragon Boat Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3 non profit corporation and is dedicated to the cancer recovery process and the sport of dragon boat paddling. Dragon boating has a proven track record of helping breast cancer patients reclaim their health and lives following treatment. Survivors (also called Warriors as they fight to reclaim their lives), and supporters are taught to work together building speed, teamwork, resilience and fitness, supporting one another both in and out of the boats. We paddle in Annapolis in season every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. ADBF also pursues an active racing agenda, and in 2018 will be representing the State of Maryland in the International Breast Cancer Paddling Commission Festival in Florence Italy, where more than 120 teams of breast cancer survivors from around the world will be competing in Dragon Boat races
